Introduction – About Kabaddi
Kabaddi is one of the oldest and popular game of India. It is also known as an ancient Indian sport.
Kabaddi is played between two team, with seven players each, with the intentions to score points by raiding opposing team’s court and returning to their own court. The kabaddi match is divided into two halves of 20 minutes each i. e. total 40 minutes game. The players take turns sending a “raider” to opposing team’s side to score points. The raider must chant ‘kabaddi’ repeatedly while holding their breath and try to touch as many defenders as possible. The raider must return to their own side court before running out of breath or being tackled by defenders. Points are scored for each defender tagged and for successful returns to their own side. Here, we’ll also discuss about history, popularity of kabddi and techniques of kabddi.
Kabaddi is mostly played by children in schools, colleges and any sports place. It is a physical game which makes the players physically strong and energetic. Kabaddi is a big competition in schools and colleges among students during sports days.
Nowadays, their is a great craze of playing kabaddi among the children. Children participates in this game by making many teams and compete each other and try to win the the match by enjoying the game and giving their best.
History Of Kabbadi
The origin of the game dates back to pre-historic time, played in different forms. The modern kabaddi game was played all over the India and some parts of South Asia from 1930.The first known framework of the rules of kabaddi as an indigenous sport of India was prepared in Maharashtra in 1921 for kabaddi competitions on the pattern of Sanjeevani and Gemini in a combined form. Thereafter, a committee was constituted in the year 1923. which amended the rule framed in 1921. The amended rule were applied during the all India Kabaddi tournament organized in 1923.
The all India federation was formed in 1950 to look after the promotion of the of the game and the senior national championship started from the year 1952. The new body, AKFI (Ama-teur Kabaddi Federation of India) came into existence in the year 1972 affiliated to IOA (Indian Olympic Association) with a view to popularized the game in India and neighboring countries of Asia. After formation of this body, Kabaddi took a new shape and national level competitions also started for Juniors and Sub – Junior boys and girls.
The first Asian Kabaddi Championship was held in the year 1980. Earlier, it was plays only for fun or enjoyment but, now it become a competition in the world and many countries are participating in this sport.
The World Cup of Kabaddi was organized in 2004 at Mumbai (India) between Iran and India, India won the first World Cup by beating Iran in the finals. And the second World Cup was held in Panvel (India) in 2007 and India again become Champion.
The first Asian Women Championship was held at Hyderabad in 2005 and India won the Gold Medal. Women Kabaddi was included for the first time in the South Asian game held in Colombo (Sri Lanka) in 2006.
Popularity Of The Game(Kabaddi)
Earlier, the kabaddi was played only in few countries in Asia, like India, Bangladesh and some few countries but, now it is popular and played all over the Asia. Most of the countries in Asia are participating in the kabaddi and the are playing for their country’s pride.
Kabaddi is the second most popular game in India after cricket. It mostly popular after PKL i.e. Pro Kabaddi League, which was launched in 2014. Kabaddi is a sport of joy that enjoys good fan base, which is growing day by day. Countries like Iran, Bangladesh and Nepal has already declared Kabaddi as their national sport. The inauguration of the Pro Kabaddi League has resulted in the increased number of followers not only India but across the globe.
The countries like Argentina, South Korea, USA and some more countries adopting the game significantly, Kabaddi has made its way in various parts of the world. KPL(Pro Kabaddi League) itself has some famous players participating from across the world. Kabaddi has the potential to become a globally popular sport. KPL has also now become a most lovable like IPL among the people.
Techniques Of Kabaddi
Raid
The team has to send one player from their team to the opponent’s team half to raid know as raider.
The raider has to start from the cent-reline by saying loudly “kabaddi kabaddi..” repeatedly without breathing. Then he has to run from one side to another of the court in order to touch opponent’s player by his hands or legs. Once, touched the opponent, the raider has to come back to his court through the cent-reline without breathing and breaking “kabaddi kabaddi…”. The team gets the points according to the number of players the raider touched.
Defending And Holding The Raider
The objective of the opponent is different from the raider. The opposite team prevents raider from touching of any member of their team and advice their members the way to catch and trap him without allowing the raider to get back to the cent-reline. If the raider is caught and at the same he breaks his chanting, he will be declared out.
Lona
Through the excellent efforts of any team of the kabaddi, is able to out all the players of opposite team, then, that team is entitled to gets two extra points as a bonus called “Lona”.
Referee
The referee plays a very important role in kabaddi who ensuring a fair and smooth game. Referee maintains the rules and regulations of the game and take a fair decision for both the teams.
Scorer
Scorer fills the score sheet of both the teams and announcements of the score allowing by the referee at the end of each half.
Referee make the notes of the team winning the toss and also keeping the notes of the timing at the beginning and end of each half of the game.
Conclusion
Kabaddi is a combative game, with seven players on each side, played for a period of 40 minutes with a 5 minutes break. The primary aim of the game is to score points by raiding into the opponent court’s and touching as many defense players as possible, without getting caught and breaking breath.
