The Early Days and Initial Challenge

Prior the 2022–23 season, India’s inter zonal cricket consisted of five teams, representing the Central, East, North, South and West zones. With the addition of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) before the 2018–19 season, a new zone was necessary when zonal cricket returns in 2022–23. As a result, North East Zone cricket was established in August 2022 for both men’s and women’s cricket.

In August 2022, BCCI announced that North East Zone will be one of the six zones to competing in the 2022–23 Duleep Trophy. This was the that North East Zone’s first competitive cricket tournament in India, with Hokaito Zhimomi served as captain.

Initial challenges were no crowds in the stands to cheer the wicket, no colorful banners and no loud commentary.

Development of Infrastructure

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah inaugurated state-of-the-art training amenities in North-East India, benefitting six states with advanced infrastructure. The facilities include indoor nets, swimming pools, and fitness centers for year-round training. The initiative aimed to boost cricket in the region, with the North East Zone making their debut in major cricket tournaments.

 Challenges and Future Prospects

Talent from the Northeast is limited, but those nursing the dream of playing at first-class level have no opportunities; it’s said to be a region of no hope. The weather, terrain and security situation are all hostile to the game’s development. Even with BCCI’s resources, it has been too much of a challenge to promote the game in the region.

 Conclusion

In the course of the years, the Northeast region may have not churned out regular national team cricketers, but has periodically developed quite a few outstanding players, which attest to the increasing number of budding cricketers from that part of the country.
